Globalization and increased competition have increased the demand for organizations to continually provide excellent products and services. Business performance depends largely upon how well the product or service is. Only satisfied, motivated and trained employees can produce quality products or provide quality service. 1.2 Research question: Determine how training can improve the skills of employees which in turn help in increasing employee and customer satisfaction, productivity and eventually business performance. 1.3 Background: Research Significance and Problem Identification: Although many organisations provide their employees training opportunities to progress within the organisation structure, little has been focused upon employee training for organisations efficiency and performance. Although the terms training and development are often linked, these address slightly different needs. Training focuses on learning the necessary skills and acquiring the knowledge required to perform the job. It deals with the design and delivery of learning to improve organization performance. On the other hand, development focuses on the preparation needed for future jobs; it should be considered investment in the work force since its benefits are long term (Armstrong, 2006). Effective training is paramount for survival and growth of a business. Training is not just about developing people but helping them to become more confident and capable in their jobs as well as in their lives (Wilson, 2006). The significance and value of training has long been recognized. The need for training is more prominent given todays business climate and the growth in technology which affects the economy and society at large. Employee is trained to assure that current or future needs of the organisation are met. 2.3 Hard vs. Soft Skills Training: There are two basic categories of skills training: hard and soft skills (Armstrong, 2008). Hard skills are technical or administrative procedures related to an organizations core business while soft skills are attitudes and behaviours exhibited by employees while interacting, which affect the outcomes of such interactions. It is easy to train and identify the need for hard skills training, while soft skills relate to personal, individual development and are most difficult to define and measure. Some types of training have both hard and soft skills components. Sales training for example, may encompass hard skills such as product knowledge and price negotiation, and soft skills such as empathy and listening (Smith and Mazin, 2004). It increases the job skills and knowledge of employees at all levels and expands the horizons of their intellect and their personality. Training and development helps in indicating the sense of team work, team spirit, and inter team collaborations. It also aids the organisations to get more effective in decision making and problem solving. It also helps in developing leadership skills, motivation, loyalty, better attitudes, and other aspects that successful workers usually display (Armstrong, 2008) (Bratton and Gold, 2003) (Pont, 2003) (Price, 2007). 2.6 Training Process: Training process takes place within the context of the internal and the external environment of the organization. The basis for most training remains the traditional training process system. This involves: 1. identifying the needs for training and development of the company; 2. Planning training or devising a learning plan; 3. Carrying out or delivering training and 4. Assessing and evaluating outcomes/results. A training need analysis is the first step in identifying the types of programs that will further organisations goals, which helps to decide whether training is appropriate at all. The organisations have to assess why they need training (Smith and Mazin, 2004). Then plans are made on how to deliver the program and by which method. Armstrong (2008) places a great importance on the design of training policy because of its significance of effects on the business. It is an important issue and requires close attention to the organisations mission, ethical stance and strategic visio n. All the policies should be aligned to the companys mission and objectives. 2.7 Training Methods: Learning and development can focus on different components of employees as proposed by Lee (1996). Organisations can adapt different techniques of training for their businesses and according to their requirement. Some techniques consist purely on acquisition of knowledge, some focus on skills development of its staff, some even focus on sentimental aspects of the employees and their relationships with others. Few activities seek to integrate all the above. Staff training can be conducted on the job, which is carried out at the trainees workplace, and off-the-job which is carried out away from employees work place (Mullins, 2007). Training methods include observing, questioning, interpreting, reviewing, coaching, e-learning, workshop, induction, job-shadowing, mentoring, seminars, classes, open learning, project work, workshop and simulation. 2.8 Why Training Fails Training is not always the answer to performance problems. Some training analysts (Rosner, 1999 cited by Smith and Mazin, 2004) believed that training could be a good investment or could be a waste of resources. Training is indeed a waste of money when the desired behaviour does not occur. Thats why training and development doesnt succeed all the time to achieve desired results and in obtaining aims and objectives of the organisation. There could be many other reasons for the failure but most common are (Web 2): Training is often implemented for the wrong reasons and seldom aligns to a business measure. It fails because of lack of objectives to provide direction and focus. Sometimes the solution proves too expensive for the desired outcomes. The HR manager has responsibility for training and development and performance management. Human Resource Managers need to understand the nature and process of training and development in order to be able to facilitate learning and development within the organisation (Watson, 2006). HR managers are involved in planning and implementing programs designed to improve the performance of their employees in order to improve the effectiveness of the organization. Structures are necessary to support the effort of training managers and trainee employees. Training according to structure and culture provides organizations flexibility, adaptability and durability required for growth and survival(Redman and Wilkinson, 2006). 2.13 Conclusion: Scholars and writers have emphasised on the importance of training and development of the employees for the better performance of any organisation. In internal research, companies own business data, records and reports, and previous research studies were analysed. External research consisted of collection of data from other sources like magazines, newspapers, publications, reports, journals and websites. As the social/management research generally necessitates the deductive approach rather than inductive research, the researcher chose this method of reasoning. In deductive approach particular instances were deduced from general inferences. In this type of theory conclusion followed logic ally from premises or available facts. This approach helped the researcher for collecting the data that defined the problem area (foreground theories). Research was conducted utilizing both ‘Primary and ‘Secondary methods. Primary data was collected with a focused plan and gathered specifically for this research (Saunders et al. 2007). Secondary data (which was collected from other sources or published data) was used in ‘Descriptive and ‘Explanatory research. Examples of primary data that the writer collected were interviews and questionnaires. Primary data was collected specifically for data analysis but secondary data collected was for both literature review and data analysis sections. Both primary and secondary research included ‘Qualitative and ‘Quantitative data. As per the requirements of the research, the researcher collected both qualitative and quantitative forms of data and integrated the information in the interpretation of the overall results. Quantitative research involved the use of structured questionnaire where the response options were predetermined by the researcher. Measurement was objective and statistically valid. Qualitative research was subjective in nature and involved collecting and analysing data by interviewing people. Some of the qualitative research was coded quantitatively for the purpose of reaching the conclusion by assigning meaningful scales and numerical values. Interview is one of the best ways for getting behind the story of the participants experiences. It is very easy way to gather primary qualitative as found by the researcher during the research process. Interviews were conducted to collect valid and reliable information (Saunders et al 2007). The researcher was aware that questionnaire is the most popular method of conducting scholarly research. It provides a convenient way of gathering information, easy to analyse, and most statistical analysis software can process it easily. It is also cost effective method of collecting data and is familiar to most people. Questionnaire can be circulated easily and response rate is fast (Saunders et al 2007). The writer chose ‘Closed ended Questions in formulating the questionnaire for timely response. The concept of mixing different methods originates in the realisation that all methods have limitations. Using a multi-method approach reduces bias and increases validity (Saunders et al. 2007) . The findings from the research were then tested on theories for reliability and validity (Saunders et al 2007). Good practice is only possible if the research data is valid, reliable, and sensitive (Johnson and Scholes, 2002). The researcher ensured that appropriate variables, techniques, scales, and assumptions were used. Proper measures were taken while gathering secondary data and information was checked for its validity and reliability while maintaining sensitivity in order to keep facts as original as possible. 3.4 Sampling It wasnt possible to collect data from all the sources and all the population. Therefore sampling was applied. The accuracy of research depends upon the way the sample is selected. The researcher conducted interviews from managers. Questionnaire was distributed to randomly selected employees. 3.5 Limitations and Constraints Researcher realized that not all the processes and methods could be used and dropped few methods (like focus groups) of secondary choice due to time limit and minimum resources. The major limitation of the study lies in its relatively small sample size of customers and the limited coverage. This was mainly attributable to the limited time and other resources available for the study. 3.6 Data Analysis Tools Internet has become the most used method of communication due to its comparative ease and effectiveness. Paint is very simple and straight forward. The disadvantage of paint is that your drawing isn’t accurate if you have a steady hand. The difference it would make if I used paint is that it would be easy and also it comes free on the computer. Paint can be used by anyone even children. Another disadvantage is that people might think that paint is not suitable for them due to its childishness. Paint already comes with the computer. Also It is slow to use and the file document for paint looks too childish and also pictures cannot be uploaded on database. Input The input devices that I am going to use are keyboard, mouse and scanner because these help me to create a database. Device Speed Errors that can be made Way to correct errors Keyboard The keyboard doesn’t actually have a speed that it works it depends on how the fast the typist is. The errors that can be made is that when someone is typing too fast or normally then they can press the wrong buttons and then the word becomes the wrong spelling which can lead to problems such as, if you spell the name wrong then the ticket can be addressed to the wrong person and also if you enter the address wrong then the ticket will be sent to a different address. This will cause a lot of hassle. The ways to correct this is asking the customer what he has said and to reassure that he has said the right things and if the customer has said a letter then you can use phonetics like â€Å"a† for â€Å"apple. † Mouse The speed of the mouse depends on how fast the user actually moves the mouse. The errors that can be made with a mouse is that you click on the wrong thing and this could also lead to a lot of difficulties because if someone booking a ticket to a certain place then if an employee clicks on the wrong place or the wrong time it will cause a lot of havoc. The ways to prevent these mistakes is by when the employee is talking to a customer then he should double check that what he is clicking also another way you can prevent these thing is by having shortcuts and switchboard so that there is less chance of clicking the wrong thing. Scanner The speed of the scanner depends on how powerful the scanner is like if it is powerful then the scanner will be quick for scanning. The errors that can be made on a scanner is that if someone is accidentally put the paper the wrong way round then the picture that appears on the screen will be also the wrong way round this will be trouble for the company because if their logo is the wrong way round then the they will put their logo up and when they do that the customer will see that the company is not professionally trained and then customers might not join the company. The ways to prevent this is by double checking first if the paper is the right way round and that the lit of the scanner is shut properly and to see if you have typed in the right settings and that you give the scanner enough time to scan. Keyboard To detect errors in my work I used spelling and grammar checker, which showed me the errors that I had made in my work. I also proof read the work to make sure there were no errors. I corrected some errors manually by reading through the work and then correcting the errors and I also right-clicked on the mistake and chose from the matching/possible spellings. I corrected the errors in my work by using the eraser to erase unwanted lines or markings and I closed the program that had opened accidentally and opened the one that I needed for my work. To prevent errors from happening in my work I drew everything carefully and slowly and did the drawing step by step to make sure no unwanted markings/lines were made. I also clicked items carefully to make sure that no other programs or tools were opened or clicked. I also used specific buttons to automatically draw a proper line or to direct me exactly to the location I wanted to reach. I also checked that the scanned image/text was exactly the same way around as the original piece. The ways this problem can be prevented is that when the customer phones in, when the employee is speaking to the customer and the customer tells him his detail then when he says something the employee can use phonetics e. g. â€Å"a† for â€Å"apple† or other than that the employee can use headphones to hear the customer more clearly or use a webcam to see the actual customer and there will be less chance of the employee to make a mistake and these are they way it can be prevented. Address not correct, such as postcode The effect of the address not being type in correct is a great thing because when the company sends the ticket to the wrong household then when the customer asks when the ticket is going to arrive then there will be confusion and argument and by this the customer might leave or the will further wasted time by making a new one. The way to prevent this problem is that when the customer tells his detail and when the employee hears then there should be validation and verification then there will be less chance of misconception. Recommendations not checked correctly If the recommendation is not entered properly then what the customer would have wanted on the flight will not be there and if it is a old person that requires space then if the company entered the wrong recommendation then it will cause the old person a lot of trouble. To prevent the wrong recommendation then the company could put the right input mask in then there will be less chance of the recommendation being type incorrectly. Gender not entered correctly. If the gender is not entered in properly then when they are boarding or in the airport then there will think that the customer will be trying to fraud his passport and this will cause a great hassle. Also if the gender is entered wrong it can cause the customer a lot of embarrassment. To prevent this type of mistake then the company should put validation and verification and make it only they can enter the words â€Å"male† or â€Å"female† and by doing this will reduce the chance of making a mistake in writing whether male or female. Date of birth not entered in correct format. The problem if the date of birth is not typed correctly then when the customer goes to the airport it could can be very embarrassing and after the customer might chose to leave the company. To prevent this mistake the company when making the database they could put in the right ‘Input Mask’ and the right data type. Subscriptions not entered in correct format If the subscription is entered incorrectly then if like a fat person asked for 2 seats then if they get it wrong then when the fat person goes in the plane then it will cause him a lot of hassle. To prevent this mistake then the company should put in the correct input mask and the right data type and also use phonetics and this will lower the chance of making a mistake. The best method of getting the most accurate information is to re-check with the customers. Validation When someone is entering data into something it is very vital for you to enter it correctly. This is why validation comes in. The actual meaning of validation is to make sure the data is allowable like when you get a database and when it says enter gender and if you enter something besides â€Å"male† or â€Å"female† then it does not allow you this what validation it. Black Poems Essay

In the past during apartheid being black meant you lost out in many privileges it also showed how black people where oppressed. In this poem we see that Mbongeni Khumalo uses the word black in connection to all the bad things. He highlights that there is this darkness associated with the colour black and that in the 1960’s when someone called you a black person it showed nothing good and that no one should be proud of being black. He also looks at all the words that start with â€Å"black† and if one looks deep into them then we see that there’s a deeper meaning to that particular word and that it has got something to do with wrong doing or bad happenings. The first line of the poem reads â€Å"you don’t need a BLACK-BELT to write blackpoems†, if one looks at this line and critique it then we see that he says that one doesn’t need a black belt to write black poem and the way it is written from the small letter at the beginning of the sentence to the to the black belt in a big font and black poems as one word this shows that as a black person no one really paid attention to the diction of the poem. â€Å"B/LACK† when one looks at this word and the way it has been written then you can interpret it as be lack, as if he’s trying to point out that when you are black you lack in something. He further one uses the word â€Å"prac-teasing† and instead of writing practising he uses the teasing showing that he was isolated for mocking black art but in his own right one can argue that he was not mocking it but just highlighting the points that were true and that there was a time when anything that was done by a black person was just done and not taken seriously, a black person could only go so far with their art. â€Å"Trampling my so(u)l/e/† the way he has chosen to break down the word soul in a way that one can say he is trampling the word himself and he also adds an â€Å"e† at the end which shows that he can do anything to this poem since it is a black poem. â€Å"Served sausages made from minced pork and call(ed) it BLACK PUDDING† one can say that it was called black pudding because in the black culture the only time that the families ever ate pudding which consisted of custard and fruit was during Christmas otherwise black people always feasted with meat he could also have been referring to himself as the black sheep because he did not eat meat and in that case being black and not eating meat meant that you were a different type of black person and therefore you were out casted and you were a black sheep. â€Å"I suffered a BLACK DEATH at the hands of a BLACK GUARD†, what the writer brings out in this line is how black people still killed each other regardless of the fact that they were all oppressed by the same people for the same reason. The guards were also said to be puppies for the oppressors so that the hit on them could be lighter and that they could spare them their lives. So it shows that black people were also turned against each other and killed each other just so that they can hold their own end. The language that he has chosen to use is simple but the was in which he has broken down his words and placed them in way that one could clearly see the point he is trying to make about black poems. As one carries on to read this poem you could say that this is not a black poem but a poem about black people. He uses a playful tone but at the same time the way he stresses some words to show his point and the double meanings behind them. He also used the words to show what was happening in that time to black people trying to pass on the torch of awareness so that people could stop being naive and actually know how things were done in that time. He attracts the reader by his title which is â€Å"BLAK POWEMS† which shows the way he wrote it as if he were a actually saying it in a Bantu accent, so he chose to write it the way he would say it because no one really paid close attention to the diction and the style of the way black poets wrote their poems because it always ended up being black people reading each others poems. The way this poem has been written it shows well that it is protest poem in such a sense as when one looks at the diction used in this poem and the style of writing that the poet has chosen to use. He plays with associations surrounding blackness to put his point across of how blackness is associated with bas things and in this case particularly back in the 1960’s during times of black oppression and apartheid. The tone of this poem is in a playful but honest manner, not harsh but it keeps one intrigued that there could be so many things associated with the colour black that represent a darker side of life and the poet does a good job of bringing them out and also highlighting them. This poem makes the reader see the problems that the past could add on to a simple phrase or word. The word black in this poem has been separated and put on a spectrum whereby we can all see the negatives that could and that are surrounding this one word in particular. The poet has also made us think of how history played out and he did this not by writing that in the 1960’s this is what happened but he used words that show or highlight the main events of the 60’s.
